As a health professional who has worked to help those whose mental health has been undermined by the intensity of the recent presidential campaign, I am appalled by State Representative Bobby Kaufman’s recent statements. He says “suck it up, Buttercup” to those who are suffering and seeking anything involving taxpayer-funded aid. Well, my work at the University of Iowa Department of Family Medicine is funded in part by state appropriations. Rep. Kauffman: Am I subject to your upcoming legislation to punish state universities that cater to such “work?”
I can understand Trump supporters celebrating their victory. But when some people’s celebration is based on the sadness of others? That, at best, is crowing. More accurately, it is vindictive and cruel.
In the past, I have visited with Mr. Kaufman’s father, the current chair of the Iowa Republican Party, who, despite our differences, I have found to be far more circumspect.
I hope father talks with son and convinces him to begin the work of walking his statement back.
